Is separate collection enough? How to improve HHW management

WORKSHOP 6: Is separate collection enough? How to improve HHW management

7 October 2026 | 11:00 CET

Online Teams Event

  • EVENT DESCRIPTION

The mandatory separate collection of household hazardous waste (HHW) has been in place across the EU since January 2025. But is separate collection enough to ensure effective and sustainable HHW management?

The last episode of the Hazards Out workshop series in 2026 will take a step back to make a strategic overview of what is needed to move from the implementation of separate collection towards effective, sustainable and engaging HHW management strategies.

The workshop will present the results of the Hazards Out Toolkit, bringing together the knowledge, case studies and practical insights gathered throughout the project. The Toolkit aims to support local authorities, waste management operators and other stakeholders in understanding the key elements of effective HHW management and identifying opportunities for improvement.

It will be followed by a strategic exchange with European and national authorities and stakeholders, exploring how HHW management can be further strengthened at national and European level. We will discuss what are the remaining gaps and challenges in HHW management, how can national and European strategies better support local authorities and waste operators and how to further strengthen cooperation between institutions, municipalities, waste operators, industry and other stakeholders.

We will also explore how the lessons and recommendations emerging from Hazards Out can inform national and European strategies, and what further actions are needed to ensure that separate collection meets effective management of HHW throughout the entire value chain.

Join us on 7 October 2026 at 11:00 CET for the final Hazards Out workshop in 2026 and contribute to the discussion on the way forward for household hazardous waste management in Europe.
